Keep Rivers Wild for Wildlife
Game & Parks Aquatic Education
The Nebraska Game &
Parks Commission is charged with managing the fish and wildlife resources of
Nebraska, along with our State Parks and recreation and wildlife areas. As part
of the Commission's commitment to wildlife education, Game & Parks manages the
Aksarben Aquarium at Schramm Park State Recreation Area south of Gretna. Game &
Parks also operates a Youth Fishing program, and provides teaching aids
for aquatic education in the classroom.
The Commission's
Aquatic Education program is a great source of free classroom materials. By
enrolling in the Aquatic Education program, teachers can receive a free packet
that includes a coloring book, a fish anatomy poster, a Nebraska Fish poster,
and the NebraskaLand Fish Book -- a great source of information on Nebraska fish
species.
The Aksarben
Aquarium also loans out Hach water testing kits that can be used to test your
local stream or lake for pH, dissolved oxygen, and nitrates, and turbidity. A
Fish Trunk, macroinvertebrate collecting kits, video tapes and preserved fish
specimens are also available for use in the classroom.
