Following the Migration of Monarch Butterflies

Students throughout the USA, Canada and Mexico follow the spring and fall migration of monarch butterflies using two Internet sites: Monarch Watch: http://www.monarchwatch.org/ and Journey North:

http://www.learner.org/jnorth/orientation/

To have your class join in reporting observations of monarchs, simply follow the directions for registering on the Journey North website.

Monarch Watch invites you to join a list serve in order to report your sightings: dplex-l@listproc.cc.ku.edu

All of these sites are active during the fall migration too. At that time your students also could participate in tagging the monarchs that come through your area in September. The Monarch Watch website gives information on how to purchase tags. They are tiny stickers printed with information and come with a record sheet to be filled out and sent in.

Monarchs that your students raise in the fall can also be tagged. Should any of your tagged butterflies be found, you can read about it on the website.
