BUTTERFLY LIFE STAGES RELAY
An Activity for Science Club or an After School Group
Materials: 2 scooter boards from P.E. department
2 beach towels
Site: On cement slab near playground equipment
Egg Stage: Students curl up on the cement slab in fetal position.
Larva or Caterpillar Stage: Students uncurl and take off on the scooter boards at sound of whistle.
Chrysalis Stage and Emergence: Students wrap in beach towel and hang from bars through the count of 10. Then they unwrap and pump their arms 10 times (pumping fluid into their “wings.”
Migration: Students crawl up a slide (or over the jungle gym) to simulate the mountains of Mexico.
Students are rewarded with nectar (orange drink) that they sip with their proboscis (straw).
