Nebraska Wildlife Federation Presents

Wildlife Week Nebraska 2008: Pollinators!

April 20-26, 2008

The Nebraska Wildlife Federation is once again sponsoring Wildlife Week Nebraska. Our theme in 2008 is Pollinators! We seek to educate Nebraskans about the importance of bees, butterflies, birds, and other pollinators in our life, and the threats they face. We want all Nebraskans to better understand what they can do to help pollinators survive and thrive in our state.

Wildlife Week Nebraska is affiliated with National Wildlife Week, sponsored each year by the National Wildlife Federation. We will celebrate Wildlife Week Nebraska along with National Wildlife Week April 20-26, 2008.

Why Does The World Need Pollinators?

Click here to find out why pollinators are essential to the survival of most flowering plants on planet Earth. Humans and other animals depend on pollinators for much of their food. In return, flowering plants produce nectar, a food for the pollinators. Because of the loss of habitat, wild populations of the insects that help pollinate food crops are decreasing.

Pollinator Curriculum

Click here for information on the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign educator's curriculum. The comprehensive pollinators curriculum includes five modules, and is designed for teachers in grades 3-6.

We also suggest you check out the Nebraska Wildlife Federation's 2006 Wildlife Week online curriculum, Migration: Wings on the Move, which includes a whole section on Monarch butterflies.

Is An Outdoor Classroom in Your Future?

Click here for information on creating an Outdoor Classroom right at your school. Learn how to create an outdoor laboratory where your students can learn about nature in a hands-on way. Outdoor classrooms can also help teach biology, math, Nebraska history, art, and Great Plains literature.

Access information on how to plant a Monarch Waystation and a pollinator garden in your schoolyard, and learn how you can certify your Outdoor Classroom through the National Wildlife Federation's Schoolyard Habitat Program.
